Tile
At first glance, tile countertops don’t seem as luxurious as granite or marble. However, after closer inspection, it is still a solid option. Tile offers a wide spectrum of color, material, and pattern choices. One of the biggest perks of tile counters is the number of options. Tile countertops offer the versatility to match any home decor.
As with other surfaces, tile has its pros and cons. One perk is that tile is available in a range of styles and materials. If you want a sleek and polished look, granite or another stone material may be the right choice. If you are seeking a natural style, travertine tiles might work. The sky is the the limit. Tile also offers the ability to mix, match and coordinate. Whether you want your countertops to match coordinate with your floor, wall, shower or backsplash, tile gives you the ability to do so.
Tile counters are relative easy to clean. Tiles can usually be cleaned without the use of harsh cleaners. Discolored and deteriorating grout can be an issue. However, these problems can be avoided by sticking with quality ceramic and porcelain tile manufactured for heavy duty use and opting for a narrow-grout tile design, or a layout that uses dark instead of light grout. Additionally, sealing your grout makes it even easier to maintain.
One negative for tile is that it is not as smooth as other surfaces, which may be a negative for avid bakers. This also means food particles may land in the crevices, which can be a hassle. Tile also tends to chip and crack, which requires replacement. On the bright side, individual tiles can be replaced instead of the entire counter. Finally, depending on the type of tile selected, heat resistance may be an issue for kitchen counters.
