Granite

Granite is one of the most elegant and durable natural stone materials and make ideal countertops. With a variety of colors to choose from, granite will blend in with virtually any type of décor. Granite stands up to heavy use with excellent resistance to heat and cutting. It fares less well against inadvertent impact, which can cause chips or cracks.

Each slab of granite has its own unique and natural design pattern. When granite has unrepeated patterns of color, it’s called a movement and is generally more expensive. When choosing the color of your granite, you’ll want to consider a few things. Some granite slabs that have been treated with resin can change color, usually darkening over time. Occasionally, resin can react unfavorably with sealer and can create a “cloudy” appearance.

Though not as porous as marble, granite needs to be sealed regularly in order to stay stain-resistant and maintain its durability and overall appearance. The lighter the granite, the more likely it will need to be sealed. With most granite, you’ll need to polish and reseal every three years. Beware of over-sealing, though. Some types of granite are very dense and do not need sealer.

Granite can be vulnerable to etching when put in contact with acidic liquids like lemon juice and vinegar, though not as much as marble. Although granite is a hard surface, do not use granite countertops as a substitute for a cutting board or drag heavy appliances on it. This can scratch granite beyond repair.
